FRONT COVER ANALYSIS-XXL

The masthead is written in a clear large font which makes it clear to read and it stands out. The main image on the front cover of the magazine is of Chris brown. He is featured because XXL is a hip hop magazine and he fits in to the genre and target audience. The image of Chris brown is a close up it clearly shows his facial expression of anger and distress which strikes the audience's attention to see what is making him angry or distressed. This is however does not fit in with the conventions of a normal magazine because he is not looking directly into the camera his eyes are closed. This may still capture the audience’s attention because the picture looks odd and makes you want to find out what he is doing. The colour is red this colour is eye-catching. The colour red can also symbolise danger passion or anger. There is only one cover line which suggests his importance and fame that people will buy this magazine purely because Chris brown is on the front cover. The cover line says no more apologies which makes the reader want to find out apologies for what to who etc. This also links to the image as it shows him clearly distressed and angry. The cover lines are also very unusual they are placed in the background and most of them are hardly visible this is not like most XXL magazines XXL. is mainly aimed at African American males aged 21+ who are like rap/hip hop. The image on the front cover clearly shows this as Chris brown is an African American male who is in his early 20s.

It is also aimed at people on an average income wage this is a monthly magazine the price of £3.945 clearly represents this as it would be affordable to spend this much monthly. The image represented by the front cover is a stereotypical black male this is because Chris brown is wearing a lot of gold he has gold grills gold bracelet and a gold ring. He is also has tattoos on his neck and arm which makes him look slightly scary as he is bearing his teeth. The aim of this picture is to make him look manly as it is clear he has not shaven. This attracts young males as they would like to have it all like Chris brown they may also aspire to be like him.

  1. Some quite strong analysis here of layout and of image, with a sense of genre and how this is reinforced by the mise en scene. The use of cover lines is unusual- you haven't been clear enough about how these have been placed in the background. VC
